The owl was the bird of ill omen, If a owl sat outside a house "singing" it was the near funeral song for whomever lived in the house. One superstition for seeing birds at sea was said that sailors would be accused of the worst crimes to be made at sea, there are about 6 different supersititons for birds flying north, south, east, west..etc.. Window curtains blowing open was said to bring bad luck and if you seen it fly open without touching them you were to pull them shut upon your death, also leaving windows or doors open you were allowing free spirits into your home. If you wore a dress that was pulled up the way in the picture it meant you would be ill spoken.

The two top pictures are a collaboration of superstitions. The black cat brings many different superstitions. A cat in itself was thought to endanger the health of an unborn child. Cats having ninelives was another one, they believed they had powers, and every life that was taken the more gentle the cat became.. and many more for cats. The broken mirrior was said to bring 7 years back luck to whom broke the mirrior and sometimes even their family, and whomever owned the mirrior was said to lose their best friend. The umbrella being opened indoors was said to be bad luck, if you held the umbrella over your head when opened they believed it would bring death. The bat near the window was used as a counter charm, It doesnt show it in the picture but it should be hanging upside down outside the window looking in. A boat seen left with no one in it was believed that it sank and one man drowned but the boat came back.
